A Pap smear collects cells from the cervix to detect precancerous changes (CIN) or cervical cancer early. It takes 5 minutes in the clinic and is slightly uncomfortable.
LBC is an improved cervical screening method where cells are rinsed into liquid medium, producing a clearer sample with fewer inadequate results. The same sample can be tested for HPV simultaneously.
Every 3 years from age 21-25, or every 5 years if co-tested with HPV. High-risk individuals (immunosuppressed, previous CIN) may need more frequent screening.
Abnormal results (CIN1/2/3) indicate precancerous changes - not cancer. Dr. Srilekha will recommend colposcopy and biopsy to assess grade and plan appropriate management.
If the cervix was removed (total hysterectomy), routine Pap smears are generally not needed unless the hysterectomy was for CIN or cancer.
