A Pap smear collects cells from the cervix to look for precancerous changes (CIN) or cervical cancer. Takes 5 minutes. Recommended every 3 years from age 21, or every 5 years with HPV co-testing.
LBC (Liquid-Based Cytology) is an improved cervical cell collection method — cells rinsed into liquid medium producing a clearer sample with fewer inadequate results than the traditional Pap smear.
An abnormal result (CIN1/2/3) indicates precancerous changes — not cancer. Dr. Srilekha will recommend colposcopy and biopsy to assess the grade and plan treatment.
HPV strains 16 and 18 cause >95% of cervical cancers. Regular screening detects HPV-induced changes before they become cancerous. HPV vaccination prevents infection with the most dangerous strains.
HPV vaccine is recommended for girls and women aged 9–45 years. Ideally before sexual debut. Even sexually active women benefit as they may not have been exposed to all covered strains.
