Overview

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the cause of virtually all cervical cancers. The HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) protects against 9 HPV types responsible for over 90% of cervical cancers and is most effective when given before sexual debut.

Dr. P. Srilekha offers HPV vaccination counselling and administration for girls from age 9, women up to 45 years, and advises on the catch-up schedule and the continuing importance of cervical screening even after vaccination.

Gardasil 9 protects against 9 HPV strains — types 16, 18 (70% of cervical cancers), 31, 33, 45, 52, 58 (additional 15%), and types 6 and 11 (90% of genital warts).

Ideal age: 9–14 years (2-dose schedule) before sexual debut. Ages 15–45: 3-dose schedule (0, 2, 6 months). Benefits even for sexually active women.

No. Vaccination and screening are complementary. The vaccine does not cover all oncogenic HPV strains. Regular Pap smears/LBC remain essential.

Mild side effects: localised pain, redness, occasional mild fever. Serious reactions (anaphylaxis) are very rare. The vaccine is thoroughly safety-tested.

Not recommended during pregnancy. If you become pregnant between doses, complete remaining doses after delivery.
