Epilepsy results from abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Causes include genetic factors, brain injury, stroke, brain tumors, infections, and developmental disorders. Often the cause is unknown (idiopathic).
Diagnosis involves EEG (electroencephalogram), MRI brain, blood tests and detailed seizure history. Dr. Bharath Kumar tailors investigations based on seizure type.
About 60–70% of epilepsy patients become seizure-free with the right anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs). Drug-resistant cases may be candidates for epilepsy surgery.
Usually at least 2–3 years after the last seizure before a supervised withdrawal trial. Never stop AEDs suddenly without your neurologist's guidance.
Driving is generally not permitted until seizure-free for at least 1 year as per Indian guidelines. Your neurologist advises based on seizure type and control.
