A UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) is an infection of the bladder, urethra, or kidneys — most commonly caused by E. coli bacteria. Women are more prone due to a shorter urethra.
Burning or pain on urination, frequent urge to urinate, cloudy or smelly urine, pelvic discomfort, and sometimes blood in urine. Kidney infection adds fever and back pain.
Treated with antibiotics based on urine culture sensitivity. Simple cystitis: 3–7 days. Kidney infection: 10–14 days. Increased fluid intake relieves symptoms.
Causes: sexual activity, incomplete bladder emptying, urinary tract abnormalities, postmenopausal changes, or antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Further investigation is recommended.
Drink ≥2 litres of water daily, urinate after intercourse, wipe front to back, avoid douching, and consider low-dose prophylactic antibiotics if recurrent.
