Fibroid Uterus Treatment

Overview

Uterine fibroids (leiomyomata) are benign smooth muscle tumours of the uterus, occurring in up to 70% of women by age 50. While many are asymptomatic, others cause heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, pressure symptoms and fertility problems.

Dr. P. Srilekha evaluates fibroid size, number and location with ultrasound and MRI, then tailors management from medical therapy and GnRH analogues to laparoscopic or hysteroscopic myomectomy, preserving the uterus for future pregnancy.

Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) growths of uterine muscle. They are very common — affecting up to 70% of women by age 50 — and vary in size, number, and location.

Heavy periods, prolonged bleeding, pelvic pressure, frequent urination, backache, bloating, and in some cases infertility or miscarriage (especially submucosal fibroids).

No. Small, asymptomatic fibroids can be monitored with annual ultrasound. Treatment is for fibroids causing significant symptoms, rapid growth, or infertility.

Medical: GnRH agonists to shrink fibroids pre-surgery. Conservative surgical: myomectomy (removes fibroids, preserves uterus). Hysterectomy for women who have completed their family.

Malignant transformation is very rare (<1%). Most fibroids are entirely benign. Rapid growth especially after menopause warrants investigation.
