IVF involves stimulating the ovaries, retrieving eggs, fertilising them with sperm in a laboratory, and transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus.
IVF is recommended for: blocked tubes, severe male factor, failed IUI, advanced maternal age, endometriosis, premature ovarian insufficiency, and unexplained infertility after simpler treatments fail.
Approximately 4–6 weeks: 2 weeks of stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilisation, embryo culture (3–5 days), and embryo transfer. Frozen transfers add a separate cycle.
The vast majority of IVF children are healthy. Single embryo transfer minimises twin risk. IVF does not increase birth defect rates beyond baseline.
Healthy BMI, stopping smoking, limiting alcohol, folic acid, vitamin D, managing stress, and optimising thyroid function before starting treatment.
