Movement disorders are neurological conditions causing abnormal movement — including Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, chorea, tics, ataxia and restless legs syndrome.

Dystonia causes involuntary sustained muscle contractions producing twisting postures. Focal dystonia (affecting one body part) responds excellently to botulinum toxin injections.

Essential tremor is the most common movement disorder — rhythmic shaking during action (holding a cup, writing). It is treated with beta-blockers, primidone, or botulinum toxin.

Some movement disorders have a genetic basis. Huntington's disease is autosomal dominant. Certain dystonia and Parkinson's variants also carry genetic mutations. Genetic counselling is available.
